If the success of Tasmania’s best-known cooking school, The Agrarian Kitchen, is anything to go by, the latest addition to the food family, The Agrarian Kitchen Eatery & Store, is a force to be reckoned with.
Since 2008, The Agrarian Kitchen has been synonymous with paddock-to- plate cooking, turning the small town of Lachlan into a foodie destination. After finding that people were trekking to their small patch of Tasmania purely for the food, Rodney Dunn and Séverine Demanet extended the Agrarian legacy down the road to New Norfolk, opening the new eatery and store in 2017.
Tying in with the couple’s fascination for the region’s history, The Agrarian Kitchen Eatery & Store is established at Willow Court, the site of Australia’s longest-running psychiatric hospital and home to many reported ghost sightings. However, don’t let this slightly spooky past deter you from a visit: Rodney and Séverine have given the 1925 building a serious spruce.
To transform this historic piece of New Norfolk into a refined eatery, Rodney and Séverine have installed a custom wood-fired oven, grill, and hot smoker into the kitchen, all constructed from old bricks at the Willow Court site. The restaurant is brightly lit by natural light streaming through the building’s original floor-to-ceiling windows.
Under the exquisite pressed-metal ceiling, the eatery dishes up food sourced from as little as 200 metres away at the Derwent Valley community garden, as well as The Agrarian Kitchen Cooking School, local growers, farmers and fishermen. No two days offer the same menu. Just like the cooking school, everything on your plate is dependent on what’s gathered that morning.
Seasonal, freshly picked produce is the norm here and simplicity is key to its preparation. Head Chef, Ali Currey-Voumard, has curated an à la carte menu that pays homage to the local area and its abundance of beautiful produce. This menu spans across lunch and dinner, constantly changing according to the supply of seasonal ingredients. Expect to see dishes such as whole golden nugget pumpkin baked with Pyengana cheese, or hot smoked trout with buckwheat, shellfish butter and cabbage among the rotation of wholesome dishes.
In the way of drinks, the Agrarian philosophy extends itself to a whole new level. Beverage Manager, Adi Ruiz, has created a wine list that heavily favours local drops, extending interstate for only a few select vineyards. When it comes to cocktails, Adi delves into the agrarian pantry to create his own syrups and ferments for a selection of creative concoctions.
The Agrarian Kitchen Eatery & Store is a destination for locals and tourists alike, and a tribute to the beautiful Derwent Valley location. This new slice of the Apple Isle is a must-visit for a true taste of the region, and the agrarian philosophy it has become so famous for.
