If it wasn’t for Lisa Heames, and Adam and Danni Mann who knows if specialty coffee would have ever made its way to Darwin. Leading the charge of a group of passionate foodies taking Darwin by storm, the team behind Besser Kitchen & Brew Bar is hoping to give the Northern Territory capital a bit of a facelift when it comes to food. Besser is just one part of this. The cafe takes inspiration from Melbourne’s thriving coffee culture and has succeeded in a similar fashion. Since opening, there hasn’t been a quiet day at either the group’s first café venture, Laneway, or at Besser.
Besser Kitchen & Brew Bar’s name pays tribute to the Winnellie building’s past life as an industrial office. The foundations are made of concrete Besser blocks, which were the starting point for the café’s design direction. Local Darwin design studio, V Designed, was given the task of bringing the cafe to life and reviving the tired old office that once stood in its place. These days, it is a light-filled, refined cafe that could easily be hidden down a laneway in Melbourne. A large communal dining table takes pride of place with custom plywood seats and even a few plywood milk crates surrounding it.
The design may be quaint and quirky but the food and coffee are the real stars of the show. All the usual suspects show up on the menu including Granola topped with fresh fruit, baked eggs and of course a Bacon and Egg Roll. You will also find a few funky creations unique to Besser. Poached egg fans will struggle to choose between the Potato Hash topped with avocado, smoked salmon and a poached egg, or Toast with smashed pumpkin, creamy feta, sage, baba ganoush, dukkah and a poached egg.
All delicious creations would be nowhere without a good cup of high-quality coffee. Besser’s beans of choice come from popular roasters Campos Coffee. Lisa, Adam and Danni were drawn to Campos’ ethical, sustainable approach to sourcing their beans and have since developed a strong relationship with them. Campos visits Besser on a monthly basis to train their baristas. Besser’s house blend is the Superior Blend, which is made from beans that are sourced from the world’s leading specialty coffee farms. The flavour profile offers sweet red fruits as well as caramels and a hint of chocolate and it brews perfectly as a black or milk coffee.
It is no secret that Besser is at the top of the game when it comes to Darwin cafes, the place is pumping every single weekend. However, with the amount of thought and dedication that has gone into creating such a special venue you can do little but smile and join the line.
