Lagoon Road, Lord Howe Island
Luxury beach-house style retreat with award winning restaurant
Resting some 600 kilometres off the east coast of Australia, Lord Howe Island is well and truly off the radar. Accessed by a two-hour flight from either Sydney or Brisbane, this subtropical paradise is characterised by white sandy beaches, crystal clear blue water and impressive volcanic peaks.
Capella Lodge sits at the southern end of the island, overlooking a vast expanse of ocean and the green peaks of Mounts Gower and Lidgbird. The luxury beach-house style retreat is set among lush palms and frangipani trees, with hidden beaches and picturesque walks just a stone’s throw from your suite. Days on Lord Howe Island are the kind that you hope will never end, hiking along rainforest tracks, swimming in gin-clear waters and exploring the world’s southern-most coral reef.
With such seclusion and beauty comes a dining experience to match. Cuisine at Capella Lodge is at once refined and generous, international and island-inspired. Executive Chef Cooper Dickson brings a clean, light style to the daily changing menus, designed to champion the abundance of fine local produce - fish freshly caught from the surrounding waters, locally grown fruit and vegetables and even sea succulents and coastal flora foraged from around the island.
Lunches can be enjoyed over a long afternoon in the sunshine at Capella’s restaurant or alternatively as part of an island adventure. Delicious barbecue and picnic provisions are easily packed away into a backpack for you to enjoy on a walk, at the beach, on a kayak or at one of the island’s many stunning picnic spots. In their spare time, the chefs can often be found fishing for trevally, Lord Howe kingfish or yellowfin tuna, or foraging for goodies along the coastline.
As Lord Howe locals, the chefs are passionate about their World Heritage-listed home and the surprising harvest that springs from island’s rich soils and bountiful waters. In their spare time, they can often be found fishing for trevally, Lord Howe kingfish or yellowfin tuna, or foraging for goodies along the coastline.
Sunset drinks and canapés cap off the day as the sun slips behind a pink-skied horizon and segues easily to dinner. Locally caught kingfish or tuna carpaccio remains a popular choice though if you are looking to sink your teeth into something a little meatier high quality free- range meats from New South Wales feature on the menu as do island grown greens and house-made breads and pastas.
With a location as incredible as Lord Howe Island on its doorstep, Capella’s relaxed aesthetic lets the true stars shine - ever-changing views of the ocean and mountains. Combined with a commitment to fresh, innovative cuisine, every meal here is transformed into an unforgettable occasion. The heavens seem much closer on Lord Howe.
